Introduction
Clannad is a Japanese visual novel by the developer Key. The first iterations of this novel were released on PC in 2004 and subsequently followed by PSP, PS2, 360, and now on the PS3 with uplifted HD graphics, and 5.1 surround sound. Clannad is split-up into two story arcs. The school story and what is known as the After Story. The gameplay mechanics are spent reading text that appears on-screen as dialogues. Like in most visual novels, decisions points will need to be made at key parts of the story. Some which will branch off into deeper parts of the story from the main arc. The trophies in this game are mainly focused on clearing specific character scenarios. While you can play the game naturally making decisions, you are likely to spend over a hundred hours going through the novel several times to achieve each scenario. That is if you do not utilize key save states to allow you to re-load and choose different story arcs. This guide will note key points in the story of when to save the game, and the decisions that need to be made to unlock all the trophies. With that said, this game is import-friendly even if you have minimal to no Japanese language knowledge. In this guide we will translate and outline the specific Japanese context you need to know to be successful.
Setting up the game
First you will want to install the game onto your PS3 hard drive using the option in the main menu. This will help speed-up load times and provide a more seamless experience through out the story.
It is important to setup the game options so that you put the game on “auto play” mode and to speed up the text in the game from the default options. In the main menu, you will want to setup specific options before you first start-up the game. Select the config menu using the button:
Setup your settings specially as marked in circles:
When you are finished you can use the button to exit the menu and save your settings.
This will allow you to use the button to turn-on auto-play once you begin. You will also be able to tap to fast-forward scenes if you wish to skip dialog. This is helpful when loading a save state where you have to go back through the same decisions you made previously. As this will save a lot of time.
The main factor to unlocking trophies in this visual novel is making decisions at key points in the story to be on the path to unlock the trophies. For those without knowledge of the Japanese language, you will need to know how to save your progress during key dates and moments of each story arc. The following video will demonstrate the menu options to load and save the game at the key points when mentioned in the trophy guide:
Here will use the button during a scene to bring up the menu and select the appropriate load/save menu options and the button to confirm the operation.
If you manage your saves correctly, you will be on the path to the in the least possible time. Also by utilizing these save states, you will have an easy, identifiable method to retrace your steps should you ever make a mistake or deviate from the paths outlined in the guide.
In the trophy guide it will be labeled which save slots one should save their game in to keep track of the saves that will need to be re-loaded. Even if you make extra saves or deviate from the guide, you can still identify the proper saves. As each save file will be saved with the screenshot of the current scene, the save slot, date in the story, and the current decisions available for that scene. Here is an example of a save from 4月30日 (April 30):
Finally, you will need to save your progress each time you complete a scenario to allow you to “unlock” other arcs in each playthrough. This is what the dialog will look like and will pop-up at each conclusion, and you will need to always select はい(Yes) using as the left option indicates:
This should wrap-up the minimal Japanese context that one will need to know in order to play this visual novel.
